Not-for-profits - lost between the cloud and the tower?
The Cloud and the Tower, Mark Pesce's overarching metaphor, helped to frame much of the strategic thinking about the not-for-profit sectors use of web technology at Connecting Up Australia 2009. The tower, representing organisational structures and communication strategies of past and present traditional not-for-profit organisations, faces competition, challenges or perhaps a fundamental structural threat (according to Martin Stewart-Weeks thesis) from the networked, dynamic, creative, uncontrollable and unpredictable power of the cloud, manifesting as lightning bolts such as Facebook, twitter and a host of rapid fire solutions such as www.kiva.org . This is a space where someone's good idea (or 5 focussed and dedicated people according to Mark) can theoretically have an impact as large as that of tower organisations that have been plugging away for years.
The implications of this are exciting, but many talked about the erosion of tower organisations power, action and donor bases, as people are able to do myriad micro actions or micro donations online. So is this a 3rd sector revolution? Where and what will your organization be in 1, 5 or 10 years from now?
